In August Sharon Bruneau, a version by Debby Boone was issued as a single to coincide with the release of the Debby Boone album which did not feature "See You in September". When Cassy gets to New Zealand, however, normality becomes a split with her boyfriend, a chance encounter with some very welcoming people in a van, and years Lippels Traum Film from home, a life in the midst of a cult in the beautiful, and isolated wilds, of New Zealand.

The members have formed a community with a laudable moral and spiritual ethos that is very seductive, all under the watchful and caring eye of Justin Calvin — a listener to whom the acolytes are in thrall.

It is also no coincidence that the members are named after places around the world…Rome, Cairo, Aden, Gaza… Just how deeply involved does Cassy become?

Most of us are unlikely to ever find ourselves in the position of becoming enmeshed in a cult and I think the author has done a great job in showing how the tentacles of entrapment slowly take hold.

Most community members have place names and it is hard as a reader to quite get a grip on who is who, the members are an amorphous mass of people — this demonstrates just how powerful our own names are to give us identity.

Negative thoughts, however, help us to process our understanding of the world; take that out of the equation and we can only function on half the cylinders.

Already, perceptions are changing… As time passes it becomes clear how seductive the rituals and the group mentality become, and how closing off the outside world aids in institutionalising the individuals within the community, leaving them fearful of functioning outside in the horrible big wide world.

People are taken back to childlike dependency and innocence. I found this read really gripping, well written with a very interesting subject at the heart.

The end was a little drawn out for me it lost its punchy pace, which however picked up again towards the end. She is enthralled by the atmosphere created by these caring people and decides to stay a while.

Her stay lengthens, the life appeals to her more and more. Eventually she rejects her old life marries one of the community and the inheritance from her Grandfather is happily signed over to Gethsemane.

Meanwhile her family try to get in touch and reach her but all in vain. From the very beginning we know that this joyous community is not all it seems.

I raced through the story fearing the worst! A lot of thought and research has gone into this book. It highlights how easily people can be drawn into a place where they feel loved and where they belong.

It also highlights the saying that if it looks too good to be true it probably is! Gethsemane certainly comes into that category.

May 28, Melissa Kirkman rated it it was amazing Shelves: giveaways , general-fiction. Loved loved loved this book!! Read it over a 5 hour period as I couldn't put it down.

I loved the insight into how cults prey on the vulnerable and how they so easily seem to brainwash people. I loved how real world events were incorporated into the story and how truthful and realistic the book was.

Can't wait to read more from Charity Norman! Aug 17, Gabrielle rated it it was amazing Shelves: couldn-t-put-down.

So so good! A real eye opener about cults and how they can convince a smart law student into never leaving, not by forcing them to stay but just by using gentle persuasion What an absolutely brilliant, deep and fantastic story.

Cassie goes backpacking in New Zealand with her boyfriend Hamish before resuming her studies in law. Whilst over there, they end up breaking up on the side of the road when Cassie tells him she suspects she's pregnant with his child.

She hitches a lift to Rotorua in a van with people who are warm, caring and kind. They tell her to come back with them to their self sufficient community in Gethsemane.

So she does. And never quite gets round to What an absolutely brilliant, deep and fantastic story. And never quite gets round to leaving.

I find the psychology behind the cult mentality absolutely fascinating. How at first they come across as gentle, earth loving hippies with a lovely ideology.

Then as they slowly bring Cassie into the fold and strip her of her identity, they unveil their true beliefs and intentions. By which point she's so invested and terrified of leaving that she feels she has no choice but to stay.

Yet there are many wonderful people also enslaved into this lifestyle. Aden, a truly lovely man. But I felt so conflicted as not only did he have knowledge but condoned some of the leaders behaviour.

I don't want to spoil it too much but he is an enigma that I wanted to crack. Capable of such kindness and cruelty within 2 sentences. I enjoyed every word of this book.

Maybe because I've spent quite a bit of time in New Zealand that I really felt the surroundings of Gethsemane I found myself deliberately slowing my reading pace as I didn't want it to end, yet at the same time desperately wanted to know how it all turned out.

I cannot recommend this book enough. It not only focuses on the person being brainwashed into such a life, but gives you an insight into how this affects their families, and can ultimately tear them apart.

If there is one book you should read this year, it's See You In September. I was hooked from the first page as the author took me on an gripping journey with Cassy and her family.

The setting of the community was idyllic, and I even though it's a fictional community I could see why Cassy was drawn to it.

The descriptions of the farm along with the initial acceptance and positivity from the members sounded the perfect place to escape modern life and it's technological entrapments.

As a mother of a teenager I really felt for Cassy's family back home in London and completely sympathised with their fears and desires to rescue her.

They felt like a real family who only wanted the best for their daughter before it was all too late.

This is my first book by this author by definitely not my last. I'll be recommending this to family and friends on my blog and social media. View 1 comment.

I have never read a book like this one. Jun 06, Bree T rated it it was amazing Shelves: arc , literary , psychological-thriller. So much of it relies on atmosphere, emotions, sheer numbers of people all claiming to experience the same thing.

Cassy was supposed to be travelling for the English summer months with her boyfriend before returning to London to finish her law degree.

They convince her to come and visit them where they live sustainably on a large piece of land they call Gethsemane in rural New Zealand.

There are doctors, carpenters, engineers, people specialising in permaculture and other farming aspects.

It seems incredibly idyllic and somewhat disillusioned and swayed by the calm pressure of the residents, Cassy finds herself agreeing to stay.

Cassy is legally an adult and has chosen to stay at Gethsemane. The community has its own school and is very communal, with residents having no real possessions as such and taking group meals.

He chooses his followers well, sees what they want and need and works a way to give it to them and in return they give back to him.

And any dissenting thoughts are shut down so quickly with shunning and deliberate acts that make a person feel unbalanced, so they almost overcompensate, throwing themselves into rabid belief in a way to be accepted again.

I saw it in Cassy several times. I think this book is brilliant. It damaged them all in so many ways, their family unit.

When they have no families, you can perhaps understand why this becomes such an attractive option. But Cassy had a tightknit, loving family unit — yes there were some issues and pressure to finish her degree, get a job, be successful.

For Mike and Diane, it was just unthinkable that this had happened to the girl they had raised to be a strong, independent woman in an atheist household.

But it does happen. Another amazing read from Charity Norman, 2 in a row from her now. This book literally haunted me — I dreamt about its plot last night!

Beautiful, bittersweet and thought-provoking, with characters I truly felt for and cared about. View 2 comments.

Another great story from Charity Norman. This lady is a natural storyteller. The book is about family reacts when one member joins a cult.

It is told from the POV of a mother and daughter. It is balanced and non-judgmental. I really enjoyed the narration by Scarlett Mack. Dec 22, Amber rated it it was amazing.

I've been a fan of Charity Norman's writing for a long time. Her writing is powerful, she tackles difficult and often controversial subjects, but does it so very well.

I've always had a fascination for cults, and really enjoy fiction that looks at how cults are formed, and how people become part of them.

In See You In September, this extremely talented author has taken apart the whole process of how an ordinary young girl from London could wave goodbye to her family at Heathrow as she sets off on an exciting adventure holiday in New Zealand, intending to see them again in September, just a few months away, yet doesn't return for another four years.

Cassy is an average twenty-one year old, she's studying law at University, has a boyfriend, an annoying younger sister and a stable family life.

Her father can be annoying at times, he wants the best for her; he wants her to be a top lawyer, earning lots of money.

Cassy and her boyfriend Hamish are taking a trip to New Zealand, they'll be back in September to finish their degrees, but intend to have an exciting time away from the stresses of work.

However, things don't go according to plan and Cassy accepts a lift from a friendly group of people in a white van, leaving Hamish standing by the side of the road.

The group are from Gethsemane; a self-contained village in the wilds of the New Zealand countryside. When Cassy arrives, she finds it all a little bit hippyish and intends to stay for just a couple of nights and then continue her travels.

Little does she know. Charity Norman expertly details just how easy it can be for a determined cult leader, and his followers to persuade an intelligent, well-educated young woman to give up everything; including her money, her passport and her name and join their ranks.

Whilst the reader is aware that Gethsemane. Cassy is unaware of this, but she falls in love with the place, and with the residents and with the whole feeling of belonging and love.

The author cleverly weaves the story of Cassy's family at home in with the story, and we as readers are aware of the total desperation felt by her parents and the anger of her sister.

It can be a difficult read at times as Charity Norman wonderfully portrays the absolute heartbreak suffered by her mother especially.

I really liked the extracts from The Cult Leader's Manual - Eight Steps to Mind Control. This is a very clever addition to the story, allowing the reader to assimilate what is happening to Cassy with the tactics used by the leader of a cult.

See You In September is totally gripping, my paperback edition is over pages long but I really couldn't put it aside and read it over one weekend.

Charity Norman proves, once again, that's she's an incredibly talented, brave and adventurous author. I loved this and would recommend it highly.

Mar 17, Sue Andrews rated it it was amazing Shelves: fiction , my-top-reads , i-own-it , favourite-authors , read-for-review. When I was asked to review this book by Lovereadinguk, I didn't realise the content, only that it was by one of my favourite authors.

The story starts with Cassy and Hamish hitchhiking around New Zealand during a summer university break. They split up after an argument and Cassy is picked up by a very happy group of people and taken to a remote area where the people live in a commune called Gethsemane.

Slowly she is inducted into, what turns out to be, a cult. Justin is the charismatic leader wh When I was asked to review this book by Lovereadinguk, I didn't realise the content, only that it was by one of my favourite authors.

Justin is the charismatic leader who, Cassy finds out later, thinks he is the second coming of Jesus!

Through hypnosis and mind control, the author shows very clearly how Cassy gets taken in. Every one is very happy, they live in a glorious part of the world where they are self sufficient.

Cassy's family are devastated by her disappearance and lack of communication. You may ask yourself how people get themselves in this situation, don't they realise what's happening?

But I was in a Christian sect, not anything like as bad as Gethsemane, but although in our 50's we were taken in by some of the same techniques.

I certainly recognised the 'Love Bombing' and sleep deprivation. We got out, but it takes quite a while to get back to normal life.

So I recognised what Cassy went through. This is a very true account of how it can be in a cult and of how the parents fought to get her out.

If you haven't read any of Charity Norman's books, start now, you won't regret it, she great! May 06, Billyjean rated it really liked it.

It seems from the outside unfathomable how highly educated, independent and intelligent people become involved with such organisations and yet his book demonstrates how the psychology works and how the 'recruits' are initially very gently enticed into the safe haven, then stripped of their identity and all their connections to the outside world.

It must be horrendously difficult for the families a See You In September is an intriguing and thought provoking novel exploring the workings of a cult.

It must be horrendously difficult for the families abandoned on the outside - Cassy's family is a case in point. I found the ending quite interesting - that the commune was not completely abandoned, however it goes to show how deeply ingrained the teachings of the community must have been.

An eye-opening and bittersweet read that i would highly recommend. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. It needed to be written; it was like boiling inside of us.
